A British Hero

The Duke of Wellington at Waterloo by the British battle painter Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904). Hillingford did a whole series of Waterloo paintings. Here he shows the Duke of Wellington encouraging one of his famous infantry squares the backbone of the British army then.

  1. I spent a lot of time this week talking about Wellington, talking about him in my lectures on Napoleon. Needless to say I couldn't find many paintings of him, painted by French artists, telling history from a French perspective.

Where is the Hillingford series kept?

  2. Sue the French have Napoleon who still has more glamour.
But there is no "Wellington series" by Hillingford. He did only various paintings on that subject. I think most of them can be found in good old British clubs and officers messes.
